".Canto porque hay luz y sombras,
porque hay pesar y alegría,
porque hay temor y esperanza,
porque hay amor y hay perfidia…”
          Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda (1814-1873)

I enjoy teaching Spanish because I love to share my love for the Spanish language and the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking countries. It is a great opportunity to help students to learn the language and to improve their study skills. Inevitable, students also learn a lot about themselves and their world as the semester progresses. Here are two helpful websites, and audio files for SPAN 1311

My passion is the Spanish theater including plays from the Golden Age and the Romantic periods. My favorite writers include Cervantes, Calderon de la Barca, Ana Caro, Zorrilla, Galdós, Becquer, and Rosalia de Castro. However, my interests also include many Latin American writers such as Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, Pablo Neruda, Octavio Paz, Elena Garro, Cristina Peri Rossi, and Emilio Carballido.

Movie Night I sponsor the Spanish Club to encourage students to use the language out of the classroom and to learn about the histories, cultures, customs and values of Spanish-speaking people. Students work together to provide meaningful events such as the Spring Film Festival. The Spanish Club showed movies in Spanish from three different countries and three different time periods. Please join us at our events.

el camino, y nada más;
caminante, no hay camino,
se hace camino al andar.”
