Assignments that introduce an aspect of skill building as well as encourage students to explore the material creatively are given.  By offering students the technical information available, an opportunity for discovery and advancement arises.  Through demonstrations, slide lectures and research assignments students receive a well rounded education of ceramics.  Along with this, ceramics class is a place to begin seeing things again for the first time. A coffee mug is never the same after you have to make one yourself.  Rims, bellies, shoulders, and feet must all be carefully considered to make a pot sing. Frequent critiques of form and process, or group discussions about decisions made by individuals create a studio environment of sharing and learning.

A potter friend of mine once suggested that people make pots that look like themselves.  I love the idea. It is tradition in ceramics to refer to parts of pots as if they were human- lip, shoulder, belly, and foot. There is certainly a figurative quality to my work. Recently I have been exploring surface.  By carving, using slips, stains, and layered glazes I build rich surfaces.  I like to think of these surfaces as a way to dress the pots.  I have always worked relatively small in scale-hand-sized usually.  Pots can be a very intimate part of life.  Giving people something they can turn in their hands, bring to their lips, or enjoy food from is why I am a potter.
