Eastfield Sluggers Sign with DI & DII Schools
(June 2006) Eastfield College Head Baseball Coach Michael Martin announced recently that four of his players have signed scholarship agreements with National Collegiate Athletic Association schools. Four sophomore players – Blake Gerken, Ronny Hawley, Clifton Sheffield, and Ryan Weber – announced their intentions and all have formally signed NCAA national letters of intent.

Blake Gerken, of Richmond, Texas, chose the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas, where he will be a left-handed pitcher for the Bears. UCA, under head coach Doug Clark, went 30-18 this season, and qualified for the Gulf South Conference Tournament.

Garland native Ronny Hawley will be an infielder for Delta State University in Cleveland, MS. The Statesmen, members of the Div. II Gulf South Conference, were 37-17 this season under head coach Mike Kinnison.

Clifton Sheffield, of Arlington, signed with Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, AR. Sheffield will play outfielder for the Muleriders under coach Allen Gum. The Muleriders finished the 2006 season at 40-18.

Ryan Weber, of Cypress, Texas, has opted to play infielder for the Temple University Owls, in Philadelphia, PA. Rob Valli, head coach, led the Owls to a 12-41 record in the 2006 season. Temple is a member of the Div. I Atlantic 10 Conference.

“We’re excited about the opportunities these players have to continue their education and play baseball,” said Coach Michael Martin. “I think that these players will successfully transition to the next level of their college careers and will have a significant impact on their new teams. We look forward to following their progress in the next two years and wish them good luck.”
