Guest Lecture Series at Eastfield College(Mesquite, TX) – Eastfield College’s National Science Foundation and the Eastfield Science Club will host Dr. Gillian Bowser in C135 on January 30, 2008 from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. in a lecture titled “100 Years of Natural Parks: The Role of Citizens in Protecting and Managing US National Parks.” Dr. Bowser, an adjunct professor at Texas A & M University and Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit Liaison for the National Park Service, with share information about the role citizens play in protecting, preserving and managing US National Parks. She will also talk with students about summer internships and job opportunities with the National Parks Services. Dr. Bowser has worked for the past two years in the Departments of Wildlife and Fisheries Science, Recreation, Park & Tourism Sciences at Texas A &M University. Dr. Bowser comes from a federal research background with a successful career of obtaining grants and training wildlife biologists. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Bowser has worked at eight different park locations as an ecologist or wildlife biologist from the wilds of Washington, D.C. to the parklands of Wrangell St. Elias National Park and Preserve in Alaska. Dr. Bowser‘s current research interests include changing demography around national parks and all taxa biodiversity inventories (ATBI) using citizen, science, and conservation of protected populations within parks. Dr. Bowser is an active member of the Black Faculty Alliance (Texas A &M University), Ecological Society of Americana, Society for Conservation Biology, and American Association for the Advancement of Science. She serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations including the George Wright Society, Thicket of Diversity (Big Thicket Association), and Discover Life in America. She is one of the founding members of the ATBI Alliance that works with parks and protects areas on all taxa biodiversity surveys using citizens. Dr. Bowser is also a Sloan Foundation Faculty Mentor for minority students interested in pursuing doctorate degrees in the natural science. She is also an elected fellow to the Royal Linnean Society of London. The Guest Lecture Series is a joint venture between Eastfield’s Science Talent Expansion Program project, the Science Club and Students Programs and Resources. The Lecture Series are designed to provide Eastfield students and faculty the opportunity to learn about research discoveries, to initiate interest in diverse careers in the basic sciences, and to expose students to role models in academic research, science education, and industry.
