Eastfield Lecture Series Kicks Off Spring Semester(Mesquite, TX) – Eastfield College’s National Science Foundation and the Eastfield Science Club will host Dr. Stuart E. Ravnik in C135 on January 23 from 12:30 -1:30 pm in a Lecture Series titled “Careers and Research Opportunities in Science.” Dr. Ravnik with share information about Summer Research opportunities in Science at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Ravnik currently serves as the Assistant Dean Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Prior to his appointment, he served as Associate Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Biochemistry at Texas Tech University Health Science Center in Lubbock from 1995 - 2002. Dr. Ravnik received a B.S. degree in Biology from the University of Washington in 1985 and the Ph. D in the Department of Biological Structure at the University of Washington in 1991. His thesis was titled “The Role of Lipid Transfer Protein in Human Sperm Capacitation;” he was advised by Dr. Charles H. Muller. He has completed Post-doctoral research at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, in New York (1991-1995) in cell cycle regulation in the mouse germ line and at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle (1991) studying the role of estrogen and progesterone receptors in natural killer-like cells in the mouse uterus. National recognitions, honors and awards include: the 1999 American Society of Andrology Young Andrologist Award (Young Scientist of the Year); the American Society of Andrology Student Merit Award (1990); the American Society of Andrology New Investigator Award (1988) and NSF Graduate Fellowship Honorable Mention (1986). The purpose of the Eastfield lecture series is to afford students and faculty the opportunity to attend lectures regularly, interact with lecturers through insightful question and answer sessions, and networking opportunities. Additionally, the series serves to expose Eastfield students, faculty, and staff to role models in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics careers, and in turn expose each of our guest lecturers to Eastfield's unique Science Technology Expansion Program.
