Technology
Elective

As distance learning becomes one of the preferred tools in academia it is important to remember that the Universal Design of online courses is necessary to ensure that all students will have equal access, opportunity and usability of the resources available to them. Helping ensure that accessibility policy and state and federal laws are fully met as part of an instructor’s responsibility to the learner.
There is often a learning curve when professors take their courses to the digital classroom and frustration can result when they are told that not only will classes need to be online but that they must be accessible as well. This is why the "Faculty Access to Supportive Technologies, (FAST) Team" was created. The FAST Team provides technical support to help professors bridge the gap between traditional classroom teaching and the rising demand of online teaching environments. The FAST Team's goal is to help professors explore tools and standards for creating online courses that will help them connect with the modern online student, bringing education to a new level of awareness that of the digital minded.
The FAST Team is tasked with assisting with Universal Design concepts and usability of online courses. Some examples of software used by students with disabilities include screen readers, screen magnification software, braille input / output devices, voice recognition software and scanning software that assists students with learning disabilities and visual disabilities. One of the goals of the team is to assist in ensuring that courses online will be accessible to such software and that the delivery of the course is designed in a way that is usable by all students
