Phlebotomy Technician Certificate

This certificate program is designed to prepare a person to function as a phlebotomy technician.  This program will teach students to safely collect and handle blood specimens from a variety of patients. The program is consisted of 58 clock hours of classroom training.  The first class is the Phlebotomy Essentials, which provide students with theory of anatomy & physiology of the circulatory systems, methods of venipuncture & dermal puncture, teach quality control and lab (hands-on training). Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in the theoretical comprehension of phlebotomy techniques. The second course is 120 clinical hours of Phlebotomy of 100 successful unaided blood collections, in the performance of venipuncture and microcollection techniques in a clinical facility. All students will be eligible for the certification examination through the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

10 week course includes classroom training and Lab with an additional 120 hours clinical externship. The first 4 weeks will consist of Phlebotomy Essentials which will provide the competencies required by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist for certification as Certified Phlebotomy Technician.  The last 6 weeks will include lab (hands on training). The students will be required to complete 3 week of clinical with direct supervision provided by clinical professionals.  The clinical is 8 hours per day 5 days a week.  Clinical hours are scheduled with instructor according to the students needs.   The ASCP examination must be taken before certificates are received. 

Prerequisites

High School Diploma/GED (If no H.S. Diploma or GED student must take the TABE exam and score 9th grade level or better)  ALL students who enroll in this program must complete the three series hepatitis B and TB skin test immunizations.  A criminal background and drug testing is required for entry into this class. Textbook and liability insurance require.

1. Phlebotomy -This course will cover Anatomy & Physiology of the circulatory system, specimen collection, handling, and processing and laboratory operations. Methods of Venipuncture and Dermal Puncture (blood collecting techniques) use of vacutainers, Syringes, Butterflies & Lancets for finger and heel sticks, medical terminology. Lab reports, dipstick urinalysis, oral & written communications, interpersonal relations, use and care of centrifuge, safety and disposal techniques, regulations, infection and quality control procedural, application and training.  (Phlebotomy training arm will be used)

2. Phlebotomy Clinical - This course places students at clinical sites, providing supervised experience in the performance of venipuncture.  This course teaches patient interaction and application of universal precautions, proper collection techniques, specimen handling, and data management.  Upon completion, students should be able to safely perform procedures necessary for specimen collections on patients in medical laboratories, clinics and hospitals.  (120 hours and 100 successful venipunctures)
