(Ages 13 to 18)

Parent registration/Orientation meeting required proior to registration. For all children under the age of 18, parents must complete a DCCCD Minor Student Emergency Health Release form before the class begins. Pick up form in the Continuing Education office during regular business hours. For students under the age of 15, a parent needs to sign student in and out of every class session.

Parents, are you considering Homeschooling? Are you looking for more support and curriculum resources or different teaching methods? Come to a special parents' course where we will discuss and share: philosophy of home education, Texas and national laws, homeschool parent support groups, how children learn, learning styles, curriculum resources and teaching methods for specific subjects to facilitate your children's learning. The facilitator Lisa Coleman is a certified teacher as well as homeschool parent and consultant to other homeschoolers.

Students who want to gain insight into specific reading skills and improve reading speed will benefit from this class. Practice will include suggestions for use of various types of textbooks, study skills such as note-taking, studying, research and writing, test questions including different types of essays, and test-taking techniques. PowerPoint for Teens - POFZ 1000     $130.00
Prerequisites: Introduction to Computers course.
This is a one semester course. Each person will have his/her own computer to use in the computer lab. The students will get hands-on experience learning how to create effective, impressive, professional-looking presentations ideal for class or club audiences. Parents of registered students may observe computer class in session. Each student will need to bring a 3.5" HD diskette.

Learn how to discover truth or fallacy statements, errors in reasoning, propaganda techniques, advertising and schemes, examining arguments and value judgments, and learning to be open-minded. Writing, Grammar, Speech II B - DWRZ 1000 $150.00
Prerequisites: Grades 7-9 and completion of first semester of this course.
Second semester of advanced writing course. Grades 9-12 will learn skills for college entrance essays, comparisons, character analysis, definition & summary essays. MLA standards will be used in documenting research for a PowerPoint informative speech and how-to demonstration. Grades 7-9 will write 5 paragraph essays and research for a PowerPoint presentation and how-to demonstration. Weekly homework: a short essay and grammar exercises. Parent must work with student to assist in proofreading essays for mechanical errors. Parent, please come to first 15 minutes of first class. 2 textbooks required.

Biology for Teens - SIEZ 1000 $175.00
Prerequisites: Middle school basic chemistry principles
Class meets 2 days each week. Lecture on Wed, 3-4:30pm, room TBA and lab on Fridays 4-6pm in S315. Basic life science laboratory course introduces safe laboratory procedures and provides laboratory experiments to assist students in understanding the following topics: First semester covers: scientific method; fundamentals of chemistry; chemistry of living things; cell types, structure, function, metabolism, cell division and reproduction; genetics. Second semester topics include survey of living world, ecosystems and communities; natural selection and adaptation; animal behavior. Science facilitator/instructor will guide the student in locating resources to study life science curriculum and understanding the topics presented by providing laboratory experiments and assignments. Instructor will assign outside reading and practice using handouts, textbooks, or the internet, or taking field trips to area museums. Students required to provide some lab supplies: safety glasses or goggles with side protectors, 3-ring binder with pocket dividers, 1 spiral notebook, 1 packet biology drawing paper. Prerequisites: Algebra I and junior high chemistry course
This is a one semester, full year course. Class meets 2 times per week. Fundamental concepts are presented in lecture and laboratory including the periodic table, atomic structure, chemical bonding, reactions, stoichiometry, states of matter, properties of metals, nonmetals and compounds, acid-base theory, oxidation-reduction and solutions. Descriptive chemistry is emphasized. Students are required to provide: regulation safety goggles, 3", 3ring binder with 14 dividers, and a scientific calculator. Grades 6,7, and 8. For students preparing for high school Biology. This is a 2 semester hands-on, lab-oriented course covers study and classification of living things, cells, simple organisms, fungi, plants, animals, heredity, ecology, human body systems and human health. Study is required outside of class. There will be 2 rooms assigned; one for lecture and one for lab.

Topics to include matter, motion and forces, work and machines, atoms, periodic table, chemical bonding and reactions, compounds and atomic energy, electricity and magnetism, sound and light.
