Vice President finalists arrive - (6/9)

by Irasema Romero, Reporter

Candidates for the positions of Vice President of Instruction and the Vice President for Student Services/ Enrollment Management visited the college this past week and interviewed with the president, Dr. Carol Brown.  The candidates participated in forum during their visit, allowing students and faculty to meet and question the applicants.

The process of narrowing down the applicants to four candidates for each position involved a selection committee.  To begin the process, the committee set criteria and those who met it were interviewed by the committee and now a selected few are being interviewed by the president.

The president helped decide the criteria for each positions, including related experience and a passion for the mission of a community college, said Reva Rattan, interim Vice President of Student Services/Enrollment Management.

For this specific position, the applicants were narrowed down to four candidates, which are Dr. Linda Gates Black, San Antonio College’s Dean of Student Affairs; Dr. Magdalena Teja, Dean of Student Services at Austin Community; Dr. Ernest Pickens, former Grambling University’s Vice President of Student Affair and Enrollment Management; and Alton Scales has served most recently as Assistant Vice President and Dean of Student Services and Enrollment Management.

Concerning the Vice President of Instruction position, its duties includes “the development and revision of curriculum and textbook adoption,” according to the job description.  Currently, Allatia Harris is serving as the Interim Vice President of Instruction.

Concerning the difference in responsibilities between an Interim Vice President and a permanent replacement, there would not be any change.

The four candidates for the Vice President of Instruction include Jonathan Gueverra, Dean for the School of Business and Public Service at the State University of New York in Canton; Dr.  Suresh Tiwari, Dean of Arts and Sciences at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa;   Serving as Provost of the two of the largest campuses at Daytona Beach Community College, Dr. Alex Kajtura; and Engineer Brent Donham from Richland College.

No deadline has been set for the decisions.  “It’s a thoughtful process and an important decision,” said Dr. Brown.  “This week was to create a process that to the best of our abilities was inclusive, so that all of the members of the Eastfield community had an opportunity to meet the candidates.”

Even though it depends upon the person chosen, the permanent Vice Presidents should be in the position by September 1.
