The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is a component of the reaffirmation process. It describes a carefully designed course of action that addresses a well defined and focused topic or issue related to enhancing student learning and/or the conditions that support learning.
Title: Year One: ENGAGE
Goal: To advance the SUCCESS of first-year students by enhancing their social and academic ENGAGEMENT.
By providing first-year students the opportunity to enroll in Year One: Engage Learning Communities supported by the new Academic and Cultural Enhancement (ACE) program.
Year One:ENGAGE will consist of a group of students taking together two or more of the following courses together:
- EDUC 1300 Learning Framework
- ENGL 1301 Composition I
- ENGL 1302 Composition II
- HIST 1301 American History
- HIST 1302 American History II
- DMAT 0060, DMAT 0090, DMAT 0097, DMAT 0098, DMAT 0099 Developmental Math
- Math 1314 College Algebra
To provide students the opportunities to develop stronger peer relations that may serve as social and academic support in learning within and across disciplines. Accordingly, the objectives of QEP learning communities are to:
- Enhance academic engagement within and across disciplines.
- Promote social construction and negotiation of knowledge.
- Encourage social engagement conducive to the development of peer support and collaboration.
Two models of learning communities will be implemented: a) coordinated studies and b) linked learning communities. Curriculum integration will vary depending on the learning community model in which the student registers.
- Coordinated Learning Community
In a coordinated studies learning community, two or more courses are team taught around a common theme. Professors remain in the classroom during the scheduled class time for all courses.
- Linked Learning Community
A linked learning community consists of two or more courses linked by having the same cohorts of students. Under this approach, courses are not team taught and thus collaboration in planning curriculum integrated lessons will be at the discretion of the professors
ACE is a new program intended to provide first-year students systematic support enhancing social and academic engagement beyond class meetings. Students earn points for participation in select activities conducive to credit, ACE consists of three main components:
- Social Support through Mentorship - Two Success Coaches are assigned to each YOE Learning Community.
- Learning Enhancement through Academic Skills Centers (ASC) and Library - Coordination between ASC Math and English tutors will provide enhanced content engagement outside the classroom. Meanwhile, four information literacy workshops have been designed by library experts to support specific Student Learning Outcomes of YOE Learning Community courses
- College Life - Students attend important college events, called ACE-Events (e.g. gallery receptions, recital series, Common book events, Lose to Win, Theater play, etc.).
