Emergency Preparedness Guidelines For Individuals With Disabilities

In the event that an emergency occurs on campus, it could become necessary to evacuate the buildings.  The Disability Services Office has prepared general guidelines to help you become prepared for this type of emergency situation.

  • Individuals who are visually impaired may need assistance from others to exit the building. If the individual is blind, have them take your arm and lead them out.
  • Individuals who are easily disoriented may also need an individual to guide them in exiting the building.
  • During an evacuation, elevators may not be available for use by individuals in wheelchairs.  Identify “able” bodied persons willing to assist in the evacuation.  A minimum of three (3) people will be needed to evacuate a person remaining in a manual wheelchair. If you have the opportunity, meet with the volunteers and the individual needing assistance in order to discuss the most appropriate procedure for physically handling the person and/or wheelchair.
  • Individuals utilizing large scooters and/or electric wheelchairs are notified to make their way to the east stairwell exit of any campus building.  These exits have been designated as Rescue Assistance Areas.  The College Emergency Response Team floor captains will facilitate the evacuation from these areas.

If you have a physical or mental disability that would not allow you to exit the building without assistance from an emergency responder, please click on the link below and submit the Emergency Evacuation Request Form.
