Welcome Palooza
DJ Bill Cody will get the party started to kick off 2009-2010.  Come to the Lower Courtyard for games and food.  Ride the mechanical bull, take a shot at the dunk tank or try the bungee jump.  Get a henna tattoo or maybe a chair side massage.  Lunch will include fried chicken. And with all of this, it’s a good time to meet and make new friends.

Students are welcome to relax, socialize, and have FREE refreshments.  Information on Student Clubs, campus events, prizes, and services will be available.  Getting involved in Student Life can have a huge impact on your success in the classroom.  The Club Fair is your opportunity to get involved.  Student Clubs & Organizations members will be available to answer your questions.  Join a currently existing club or start one of your own!  We’re here to assist you.  Music, free food, and door prizes add to the fun!

Constitution Day
September 17 is known as National Constitution Day.  Come celebrate the work of our founding fathers a little early as we explore and honor the United States Constitution with informational lectures and interactive discussion.  Contact the Office of Student Life for the specific time and program content information.

Celebrating Modern Hispanic Achievement in America
Film Festival Series # 1
Celebrating Modern Hispanic Achievement in America” is a film that will enlighten and educate audience members.  The film documents  historical highlights of Hispanic accomplishments and achievements during benchmarks of Hispanic political and social activism in America.   The film is a factual documentation of America’s overall modern Hispanic achievements in America.

Crain Student Leadership Conference
Sponsored by Southern Methodist University (SMU)
Every fall, SMU hosts a leadership conference for their student leaders and invites students from Eastfield and other area colleges and universities to participate.  This is a wonderful opportunity for community college students to not only develop their leadership skills, but to network with students from all across the metroplex.  The Office of Student Life pays your registration fee and provides transportation.  A $10 refundable deposit is required to hold your space.  For more information, contact Judy Schwartz in the Office of Student Life.

Introduction to Leadership
Looking to grow your leadership skills?  The Office of Student Life is proud to host the Eastfield College Student Leadership Academy Fall Workshop Series.  We have created a series of workshops open to any student interested in learning about leadership.  Each workshop will focus on various aspects of leadership.  The first in our series, the “Introduction to Leadership” workshop will start the conversation by exploring various definitions and forms of leadership.   Note:  Ask us how you can earn a certificate in leadership!  For more information, contact the Office of Student Life.

Student Leadership Workshop
Discover Your Strengths!
Leaders must know who they are:  their personality traits, their skills, and above all, their strengths.  This workshop is based upon the work of Donald Clifton and Chip Anderson called “StrengthsQuest.”  Registered students* will be given a code to take an on-line assessment called the StrengthsFinder that will determine their top five strengths.  Students will bring these results to the workshop, and they will discover how to use their strengths to reach their maximum potential. 
Space is limited.  RSVP at least 3 days in advance in order to attend.

Film Festival Series # 2
This is the second in the film series celebrating Hispanic achievements in America.   This film documents early American Hispanic influence and achievement with factual evidence and perspectives.  The film educates audience members with a foundational appreciation for the contributions of Hispanic peoples in early American history.

Fall Job Fair
The Career Services office sponsors this one day event open to all students and members of our community at large who are looking for employment.  Local businesses and major companies will be set up ready to hire wiling and qualified applicants.  Students should come prepared with multiple copies of resumes, transcripts, and other important documents and be dressed to interview.  Need tips on writing a resume or dressing for success?  Contact the Career Services Office for more information.  They are located in C-215.

The Dallas Children’s Theater
“The Most Valuable Player” is this year’s FREE community performance by the Dallas Children’s Theater.  This is the triumphant story of Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to play professional major league baseball in American.  The play is historical in nature, and suited for audiences aged 10 years and up. No tickets are needed, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Call the Office of Student Life for more information at 972-860-7185.

Robin Hemley is the winner of a Guggenheim Fellowship for his work on DO-OVER!. He has published seven books, and his stories and essays have appeared in the New York Times, New York Magazine, Chicago Tribune, and many literary magazines and anthologies. Robin received his MFA from the Iowa Writers Workshop; he currently directs the Nonfiction Writing Program at the University of Iowa and lives in Iowa City, IA.

Halloween Costume and Pumpkin Carving Contest
Costume Contest
Eastfield students are invited to participate in this annual costume event!  Come dressed in a costume and enter the contest!  The show begins at 12:00 noon in the campus cafeteria (Pit).  All students must sign up at the contest table before the parade begins.  Prizes will be given for the 3 best voted costumes.  This annual event is sponsored by the Student Life office.  Call 972-860-7185 or come by the Student Life in Room C-141 for more information.  Student participants must abide by the rules of the Student Code of Conduct regarding conduct and costume attire.

Alcohol Awareness -- DWI Simulator
Are you aware of how badly drinking can impair your ability to drive a car?  The Office of Student Life is excited to be bringing to campus a one-of-a-kind computerized vehicle that will test your ability to drive under simulated levels of intoxication.   We want students to make wise choices when it comes to using alcohol.  If you choose to drink, don’t drink and drive!

Conflict Resolution

Join Campus Activities Board and facilitator Jeff Hudson at the Doubletree Hotel for our annual Dining Etiquette Banquet.  With an opportunity to dress up and enjoy a four course banquet dinner, facilitator Jeff Hudson will give instruction in dining etiquette, appropriate conversation and overall manners for dining.  Reservations and deposits will begin October 28.  Contact the Office of Student Life for information.
