American Action Fund/Kenneth Jernigan Scholarship

 

Applicant must be legally blind and pursuing a full-time course of study toward a specific degree which can range from an associates to a graduate degree in the fall of 2003. Scholarship honors Dr. Kenneth Jernigan who changed perceptions regarding the capabilities of the blind in this country and throughout the world. Criteria are academic excellence, financial need and service to one's community. Contact organization for application. Award: $10,000.

American Federation of the Blind/Karen D. Carsel Memorial Scholarship

Applicant must be a United States citizen and submit: 1. Evidence of legal blindness; 2. Official transcripts; 3. Proof of acceptance into graduate program; 4. Evidence of economic need; 5. Three letters of recommendation; and 6. Typewritten statement of no more than three double-spaced pages describing educational and personal goals, work experience, extra-curricular activities and how scholarship monies will be used. Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing /College Scholarship Awards Awarded to qualified students with moderate to profound hearing loss to continue their education. Students must demonstrate a serious commitment to academic and career excellence. Applicant must be identified as having a moderate to profound hearing loss since birth or before acquiring language and must have a 60 dB ro greater hearing loss in the better ear in the speech frequencies of 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz. Applicants must use speech and residual hearing and/or speech reading as their primary and preferred mode of communication. Applicants must attend or have been admitted to a college or university program that primarily enrolls students with normal hearing. See website for application. Award: Unknown.

Blinded Veterans Association (BVA)/Kathern F. Gruber Scholarship Applicant must either be a dependent child of a blinded veteran or a spouse of a blinded veteran. The veteran need not be a member of the Blinded Veterans Association. The veteran's blindness may be either service-connected or non-service-connected, but it must meet the following definition: Central visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye with corrective glasses, or central visual acuity of more than 20/200 if there is a field defect in which the peripheral field has contracted to such an extent that the widest diameter of visual field subtends an angular distance no greater than twenty degrees in the better eye. Applicant must, at the time of application, been accepted for admission or enrolled as a full-time student. Recipients are selected on a 'most-highly' qualified basis utilizing the information submitted to organization. Award: Up to $2000.

Ethel Louise Armstrong Foundation, Inc. Scholarships Applicant must meet the following criteria: 1) The student must be a woman with a physical disability; 2) Must be currently enrolled or actively applying to a graduate program in an accredited university in the US; 3) Student must be active in a local, state or national disability organization - either in person or electronically; 4) Student must be willing to network with the Board of Directors and current and alumni scholarship winners on our listserv. The student must be willing to update ELA with an annual letter on her progress in her academic and working career. Student must submit typed application with medical verification form, 2 letters of recommendation, transcript and essay on topic explained on website. Awards range between $1,000 and $2,000.

Venture Student Aid Award Venture Clubs of the Americas provides young women the opportunity to volunteer in their communities while developing leadership ability through association with Soroptimist mentors. Student aid award is for physically disabled individuals (between the ages of 15-40) who could benefit from further education. Applications are available from a local participating Venture clubs or by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to the address below. Financial need and the capacity to profit from further education are the 2 crucial criteria by which each applicant is judged. Award: 1st-$5000, 2nd-$2500.
