A native Dallasite, I graduated from Adamson High School, received a
B. A. and M. A. from SMU and a Ph.D. from TWU. I went to SMU on an academic
scholarship and worked in my parents' printing shop at the same time,
I was the only student I knew who worked while attending college. On Christmas
Day of my first year, my father suffered a slipped disc and had to have
surgery. He was unable to work for the next eight months. My mother did
the clerical work, but I did all the printing during the spring semester
and the following summer. I understand students who have to work while
attending college. After graduation, I married and taught English and
French in high school while working on my master's degree. When Eastfield
opened in 1970, I became one of the proud members of the original faculty.
I started to work on a doctorate then, but my son Trey changed my mind.
I needed to keep working, and I was afraid I could not keep all three
balls in the air--a new baby, a demanding job, and a rigorous graduate
program. So I dropped out. When my son went to college, so did I. I became
a "returning student," and worked on my doctorate while teaching
at Eastfield. It took many years because I could take only one or two
courses a semester, but I finally finished it in 1999. I put all this
on my Web page to let students and potential students know the reason
I teach at Eastfield. I love the students because I am one of you.
