 ACCUPLACER MATH REVIEW  (only)

The ACCUPLACER test helps determine if an incoming student should be placed in freshman courses or if that student needs any developmental courses or help prior to enrolling in regular freshman courses. A benefit of the ACCUPLACER test is that scoring is immediate, and educational institutions have immediate access to student scores, which can aid in rapid course placement. The ACCUPLACER test is given online over the internet, and it is a computer-adaptive test. This means that when you miss a question the difficulty of the next question will lower and when you get a question right the difficulty of the next question will be slightly more difficult.

The ACCUPLACER test consists of multiple choice questions that test knowledge of reading comprehension sentence skills, arithmetic, elementary algebra, and college level mathematics. The first exam is Elementary Algebra . Depending on your score, you will then be given the Arithmetic Exam (to place you in DMAT 0090, 0097 or 0098) or the College-Level Exam ( to place you in DMAT 0099 or College level math)

If you have a strong background in high school Mathematics study all the topics on this sheet, otherwise try spending more time studying only the Arithmetic part and Elementary part.

accuplacer math portion consists mainly of three parts (As listed in www.collegeboard.com)

1. Arithmetic Test ( 17 Questions): This test measures your ability to perform basic arithmetic operations. Topics include:

I. Operations with Whole Numbers and Fractions: topics included are addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, recognizing equivalent fractions and mixed numbers, and estimating.

II. Operations with Decimals and Percent: topics included are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with decimals. Percent problems, recognition of decimals, fraction and percent equivalencies, and problems involving are also given.

III. Applications and problem solving: topics included are rate, percent, and measurement problems, simple geometry problems, and distribution of a quantity into its fractional parts.

2. Elementary Algebra Test (12 Questions): This test measures your ability to perform basic algebra problems. Topics include:

I. Operations with Integers and Rational Numbers: topics included are computation with integers and negative rational numbers, the use of absolute values, and ordering.

II. Operations with Algebraic Expressions: topics included are using evaluation of simple formulas and expressions, and adding and subtracting monomials and polynomials, multiplying and dividing monomials and polynomials, the evaluation of positive rational roots and exponents, simplifying algebraic fractions, and factoring.

III. Solutions to Equations, Inequalities and Word Problems: topics included are solving linear equations and inequalities, the solution of quadratic equations by factoring, solving verbal problems presented in an algebraic context, including geometry reasoning and graphing, and translation of written phrases into algebraic expressions.
