| Teaching, making things, and paying attention to
nature are central to my way of life. I want to instill in my students
a curiosity about the world, a desire for knowledge, and a love for
the materials, processes, and concepts of art.
I believe in a cross-cultural, interdisciplinary
approach to teaching studio art, one which engages many aspects
of students' lives and points to both universal truths and individual
discoveries. In the studio we develop "seeing" skills,
visual communication skills, and the technical skills necessary
to work with a variety of materials and tools. We explore the ways
ideas can shape images and fill them with meaning. Sequential projects,
slide talks, group discussions, team projects, reading assignments,
and museum visits encourage students to examine many possibilities
at a variety of levels. Group and individual critiques of student
work build critical thinking skills, self-confidence, and professionalism.
It is important to keep the class flexible and adaptable to change,
not only because the art world changes but also because each student
is an individual and brings something new to the class. The underlying
structure of the classroom environment and course work allows for
spontaneity and unexpected discoveries.
Through careful guidance I hope to provide students
with a broad knowledge of art, its relationship to society and culture,
an in-depth study of skills, and, based on this solid foundation,
the freedom to experiment and search for a personal vision of the
highest quality.

I'm interested in change and changelessness, in the
notion of cyclical creation and destruction, in memory, and in the
tales of the ancients. I prefer meaning which reveals itself slowly.
My work explores schema or signs as part of a metalanguage for pinpointing
localities and events in mythological spaces. The paintings involve
attention to the physical and psychological effects of color, to the
dynamic tension between figure and ground, and to the nature of form
as a vessel for meaning.
Paintings in the Popol Vuh Series are based on my
readings of the Popol Vuh, the Quiché Maya book of cosmogony.
This sacred text describes the creation of the heavens and the earth,
humans, animals, and plants. It narrates the adventures in the underworld
of the Hero Twins, Xbalanque and Hunahpu. Underlying it all is a
sense of the universe in which life and death are part of a continuous,
cosmic cycle, a cycle in which the dark interior of the Underworld/cave/womb
holds the seeds of new life.
In this series of paintings, the undulating Halha
ha Zimah (River of Churning Spikes) separates the lighter colored
upperworld from the dark underworld realm of the dead. Quiché
words and their English translations identify the subjects of the
paintings and provide the works with titles. My approach to image
making in no way reflects the refined elegance of Maya art.
The Popol Vuh paintings are dedicated to two important
teachers who shaped my life: Dan Wingren, Professor of painting,
design, and color theory at SMU, and Linda Schele, Maya scholar
and epigrapher, Professor of Mesoamerican art history at UT. Both
souls are in the afterlife.
In addition to painting, I spend a great deal of
time drawing from life, particularly from archaeological sites and
ancient monuments around the world. For me, seeing is rooted in
drawing, and there is no end to the practice. I also do installations
and other site-specific works in a variety of indoor and outdoor
contexts throughout the United States. One of my annual creative
actions is the construction of traditional ofrendas for the dead
during the celebration of Los Días de los Muertos, and these
have been shown in numerous museums, galleries, and alternative
spaces. I find the ritual of gathering and making the materials
and organizing them as offerings is a healing and centering activity
and is a way for me to combine my interests in art, culture, religion,
and the cosmos.
