The work exists as a progression of different arrangements
of forms, which are then assembled into a unified whole. They are
brought together under the assumption that there arises in the viewer
an instinct to return to the past. I see these pieces as artifacts
excavated with pick and brush from my imagination. The forms often
represent strength and violence, oppression and fear, cruelty and
brutality. Yet, within these destructive instincts I try to inject
the softness and feeling of sympathy, friendship, trust, courage,
and love. I allow cultures to arise in my imagination and I build
their artifacts. Sometimes animals emerge that no one but I have seen
and I create them. Often these architectural and animal forms are
indistinguishable, so they are created as one piece to avoid any intellectual
disorder.
Often, key information is left out of the work so that it will not
give the viewer all the answers. I prefer to provide an abundance
of mystery that engages the imagination, encouraging it to form it's
own interpretation. Thus, the viewer's interpretation can never be
disproved, no matter what conclusion is reached. For me, the artist,
these artifacts are always larger than themselves and through a sense
of control and stability I search for a point where some romantic
conclusion might emerge.
The work exists in three stages:
FORM, where all problems are worked out, including balance,
shaping of space, weight and direction.
NARRATIVE, which is selected, constructed, and assembled
with the existing form.
FINISH, the maturation process where color is added.
The durability of the finish outdoors is of little importance to me,
just as it was of little importance to the early Greeks and Romans.
They painted their pristine marble figures, only to have the color
lost before our time; only the beauty of the form remains. The color
I add is for our time, and the people of our time. It is the form
that I hope remains timeless and chants the beauty of life. |
