I believe that a strong foundation in fundamental skills is essential, especially in drawing. Drawing being more accessible and spontaneous gives the opportunity to explore, discover and to take bigger chances. I have always thought of drawing as my "scout", who goes out ahead and brings back new insight and energy. Drawing teaches us to see by making contact, expanding awareness and developing ideas and craft.

In my painting classes, students work through a series of problems which focus on developing skills while addressing formal issues such as color, value, composition and space. We discuss various approaches to painting and explore techniques and materials. Students are encouraged to explore art history and the works and the lives of artists through various periods as well as contemporary issues and art forms. Spending time exploring all types of art in museums and galleries is also highly recommended. From the beginning, I think it is important for students to develop their unique form of expression through work, research, reading, drawing, experimentation and journaling. More advanced students are challenged with more difficult projects to move them to a greater understanding of their own ideas and process, and to develop their skills and craft so that they can more effectively express those ideas.

After graduate school I returned to nature to paint outdoors, which was a logical occurrence, considering that landscape has been important to me all of my life. When I am painting the landscape, I am part of it, seeing, hearing, feeling, moving in it, with it. It is part of me. In my work I strive to capture the spirit of the physical place-to portray my own visceral response. The response is what carries the energy of the experience. The place is so important, the feel, the air, the smell, the temperature-all of these ineffable qualities come out in the work.

Landscape is an infinite source of inspiration, excitement and challenge on many levels. I am constantly challenging myself in my work, striving for deeper involvement in the true essence of my subject, in a stronger more personal response and in a more sophisticated surface quality.

Recently I am attempting to focus and simplify everything about the way I live and paint, to discover a pure harmony in subject, response and execution to effectively integrate everything I do. I have also become more intrigued with the honest expression of the "mark," and the simplicity of line and gesture. This interest has led to experimentation in approach, materials and mediums continuing to use landscape and now still life as my subject Experimentation always brings energy and new ideas to my work. Presently I cannot see what will evolve, but I am very excited at the prospect of the journey.
