Lorraine Tady
Professor of Painting and Drawing

My teaching philosophy embraces the traditional, practical, perceptual/observation-based (especially with beginning courses); analytical, theoretical and conceptual approaches to art making, encouraging breadth of knowledge, ways of seeing, individual voice, and problem solving skills. I desire to foster within students an appreciation and recognition of their strengths and efforts, a good work ethic, and encouragement to either stay in school and pursue their degree or enjoy coming back to college for enrichment.

My work is an investigation. The process employs diagramming, mapping, plan/elevation, cross-section, translation/re-translation inquiry (or subverting the clarity these systematic intentions may imply) allowing my images to be intuitively found, extracted, analyzed, shifted, and represented in various arrays. The act of invention and reinvention has often played a role in my practice of making (sculpture, prints, paintings, and drawings in dialog with one another or existing separately.) A “What if…?” or “What is…?” series of questions (in the spirit of Ludwig Wittgenstein's writings) provide an enduring catalyst to this investigation, as well as simply setting out to engage in the practice of making with certainty, and then exploring the revealed with uncertainty . These ideas, lone observation and perception, and an interest in painting and drawing language provide companionship to my play or direct making while I work through my intuitive vision and imaginary worlds.
