As I work to unpack the social, political and
cultural context of my life and my artistic practice, I consider
the following:
· The predicament of my place in the world.
· Theorizations of visual, social and sexual culture.
· Understandings and misunderstandings of the condition of
my own life.
· Interpretations of lies, truths and beliefs about world
and culture making.
· Loss, longing, absence, desire.
While giving consideration to the above, I use materials
that speak directly to a need to constantly evaluate (and re-evaluate)
certain cultural oppositions and artistic practices: straight/gay,
masculine/feminine, life/death, happy/sad. Layers, both physical
and metaphorical, are applied to the surface of my works. These
elements are piled and arranged in ways that draw attention to my
struggle to control things and my fear of screwing it all up. |
