(Mesquite, TX) – Eastfield College Women's Tennis Team just completed a successful trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament spearheaded by number one player Sofia Molina of Quito, Ecuador. Her near .500 season record against Division I Junior College and Four Year schools brought her a number one seed at the tournament voted by the coach's at the Div. III meeting.
Molina held up that ranking by breezing through the competition into the final where she faced Abigail Conover from defending champion College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL. Sofia won a hard-fought match 6-4, 0-6, 6-2. As a result of the victory Sofia was crowned the National Champion of Women’s Tennis for the 2007-08 year and awarded First Team All-American status.
In doubles action Molina teamed with partner and Team Capitan Rachel Schomer (from North Mesquite High School) fought their way into the final against the team from DuPage. The match was back and forth and tense with each team splitting sets. On serve in the final set Sofia tweaked her knee and the trainer had to come to the court. Sofia was able to complete the match but she lost her serve that game to DuPage and they were shortly thereafter defeated 6-4, 4-6, 4-6. In the end Sofia and Rachel achieved National Doubles Runner-up champs and Second Team All-American status.
