The ESL Teaching Academy is one of six adult education training programs chosen at the national level for a colloquium at the 2008 TESOL Convention in New York. The programs chosen for the colloquium represent academic and non-academic training, and include states as far as Hawaii. Eastfield College is proud of its program and proud to be included in the colloquium.

Teachers may now use ESL Teaching Academy courses as continuing professional development in ESL. The Colleges of the DCCCD are pre-approved as providers of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) activities through the State Board for Education Certification, enabling teachers to apply successfully completed ESL Teaching Academy class hours toward requirements for Standard Certificate renewal. See our DCCCD ESL Teaching Academy page.

Congratulations Steve Christie, first graduate of the ESL Instructor Skills Award certifcate program.

Whether you are an experienced or new English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor or volunteer, our quick, practical, hands-on training will provide you the tools you need to teach confidently and effectively. You’ll learn methods and techniques that really work while enhancing your ESL presentation skills and knowledge. ESL Teaching Academy training coursework is also a helpful resource for students preparing for the ExCET exam.

These new ESL Teaching Academy offerings, designed to enhance teacher effectiveness in the adult ESL classroom, provide an overview of the principal methods, approaches and techniques as they relate to the different skill areas (i.e., listening and speaking, reading, and writing and grammar).  Topics include lesson planning, materials development, use of technology, assessment, effective teaching presentation and classroom management.  Courses may be taken individually and in any order.  Background experience in ESL is not a prerequisite, however, interested students should minimally hold a high school diploma, GED or equivalent, and possess advanced-level English proficiency in order to register.  Financial Aid is available to pay the registration fee; please apply at least two weeks before the class is scheduled to begin. Class size will be limited, so please register early.
