Minimum age 7 years. Parent must attend parent orientation meeting the first day of class. This American Red Cross approved course is designed for children. Students will jump and step into water; exit pool using side and ladder; tread using arms and leg motions; move in water while wearing life jacket;  submerge; float and glide on front and back; swim on front and back using combined strokes; swim on side.  A skill test will be given at the end of the course. Girls need to wear one piece bathing suit.

This is a national Points of Youth Leadership Institute for ages 12-18 presented by Sheumona Miller, MBA, certified trainer in youth leadership. This REACH course “Tapping Into Your Future” will focus on effective time management, organizational skills, how to write scholarship essays and search for college scholarships. Summer Arts Program

Eastfield Teens Performing Arts Program - DRAZ 1000 $200.00
Prerequisites: ages 13-18
Eastfield Summer Performing Arts offers intensive, one-week daily classes incorporating singing, acting and dancing classes taught by professional college credit instructors Mary Tiner (voice), Courtney Carter (acting) and Kay Lynn Lyon (dance). The final, free Saturday at 3pm, public performance will be held in the Eastfield College Performance Hall (F210). The performance will feature selections from The Lion King. Workshops may meet in several locations: F building 1st floor and Performance Hall (F 210). Register early and complete the DCCCD Minor form for those under age 18.

Piano Festival

Beginner/Elementary Piano Camp - CHLZ 1000 $75.00
Prerequisites: Ages 7-18 with minimum 6 months piano lessons.
Register early to reserve one of only 12 openings. This 5-day piano camp is taught by Carolyn Sheets, Eastfield Continuing Education piano instructor and director/sponsor of classical, jazz and Baroque piano festivals in Dallas. Here’s an opportunity for non-piano students to join the beginner and elementary students in a fun-filled environment to learn piano fundamentals of sight reading, music theory, and performance. Students will work in a group of 12 or fewer students. Also included with this registration is entrance to all of the Piano Festival afternoon master classes, Saturday children’s recital at 11am, and Saturday professional concert performance by Rick Andrews at 2pm. Parent, please attend the first 15 minutes of the first class. Children will be supervised at all times, and extended care can be arranged as needed after the class to accommodate working parents.

Music Theory For Children - CHLZ 1000           $75.00
Prerequisites: For ages 7-18.
This course will cover beginning music dynamics and terminology, grand staff, treble and bass clefs and repeat signs.  Other topics will include rhythm, time and key signatures, types of notes (whole, half, quarter and eighth) and rest values.  There will be a basic study of chords, intervals and chord inversion, and beginning sharps and flats.  Instructional methods will involve demonstration on board, flashcard drills, chanting, clapping and movement (steps, skips for rhythm.) Textbook information will be given to parents at the first class meeting.

2008 Summer Swim Program – American Red Cross swimming lessons

Locker rooms and outdoor heated swimming pool
Twelve 50-minute classes held Monday thru Thursday.
First rain day made up by a classroom activity. 2nd rain day made up on Friday.

Required Procedures:

Register thru Eastfield College Admissions, room C119, or call 972-860-7102.

  • Complete DCCCD Minor Emergency Treatment form in the Continuing Education office, room C112.
  • Obtain Photo ID badge: pay $3 fee in Business Office in C126; take paid course registration and ID receipts and child to Computer Center in L 108 to get picture taken and badge made. Child and parent can take picture together.
  • Parent Meeting required the first day of the class session for which you are registered. For levels 3 and above, sign child in at pool, then come to meeting. Bring Water Babies and Toddlers to meeting in Room P210.
  • Child's Photo ID badge and parent’s Driver’s license must be shown when signing child in and out of every class session. For children under the age of 15, a parent or adult age 18 or older MUST sign student in and out of every class session at the pool entrance.
  • Parent of students under the age of 18 must complete the DCCCD Minor's Release form and submit it to Continuing Education office in room C112 before class begins.

Swim: Water Babies - CHPZ 1000         $75.00
Approximate age 6 mo. to 4 yrs. First day Parent Orientation and paperwork required. Water Babies class is a Parent/Child class.  Each child must be accompanied in the water at all times by a caregiver age 16 or older.  Tight fitting, waterproof pants without diapers are required for non-toilet-trained children. Water adjustment, safety, water fun, and beginning skills are taught through a progressive system.  No glass bottles are allowed in the pool area.

Level 1:Introduction to Water Skills - CHPZ 1000           $75.00
Age 4 or older. Parent must attend parent orientation on first day of class. This American Red Cross course introduces the child to water safety rules using American Red Cross Raffy Learns To Swim handouts. Other skills include enter/exit water safely; submerge mouth, nose, and eyes; exhale underwater through mouth and nose; open eyes underwater; pick up submerged object, float on front and back and rolling over; explore arm and hand movements; use a life jacket;  treading water;  swimming  on front and back with coordinated arm and leg movement to side of pool. Emphasis placed on teaching the skills through fun activities. For younger or shorter children, caregivers age 16 or older will be asked to participate in the water with the child part of every class. A skills test will be given at the end of the course to show readiness to move to next level.

Students will jump and step into water; exit pool using side and ladder; tread using arms and leg motions; move in water while wearing life jacket; submerge; float and glide on front and back; swim on front and back using combined strokes; swim on side. Prerequisites: Level 2 skills. Parent must attend Parent Orientation the first day of class.
Level 3 Stroke Development is an American Red Cross approved course designed to further the skills of the student:  jumping in and treading in deep water; performing survival float; perform the front and back glide and crawl strokes; use rotary breathing; change from horizontal to vertical on back and front; submerge and bob; submerge and retrieve object; dive from kneeling and standing positions;  learn rules for safe diving; learn butterfly kick and body motion; perform a reaching assist;  perform the HELP and Huddle positions; use Check-Call-Care for emergencies. A skill test will be given at the end of the course. Girls need to wear one piece bathing suits.

Level 4 Stroke Improvement is an American Red Cross approved course designed to build confidence in these swimming and water safety skills: treading water using sculling and kicking; front and back crawl, breaststroke; butterfly; elementary backstroke; side swimming with scissors kick;  underwater swimming; perform open turns on front and back with all strokes; use safe diving rules; shallow dive from stride position; feet-first surface dive; perform compact jump from height while wearing life jacket; perform throwing assist; learn care for conscious choking victim. A skill test will be given at the end of the course. Girls need to wear one piece bathing suits.

Level 5 Stroke Refinement course is an American Red Cross approved course designed to refine and coordinate these skills: Treading water with 2 different kicks; front and back crawl and flip turns; sidestroke; elementary backstroke and flip turn; breaststroke; butterfly; standing, pike surface, tuck surface dives; shallow dive/glide and front stroke combination; learn survival swimming and rescue breathing techniques.Stroke perfection and stamina will be increased. Prerequisites: Level 5 skills. Parent must attend parent orientation meeting first day of class.
Level 6 Fitness Swimmer is an American Red Cross approved course designed  to refine strokes for efficiency, power, endurance and smoothness over greater distances. All swimming strokes and 7 swimming turns will be practiced and refined. Participants will use pace clock, pull buoy, fins, and paddles. Other topics to be learned and practiced: fitness swimming etiquette, principles of setting up fitness program, training techniques, calculation of heart rate, principles of water exercise, and checking heart rate. A skill test will be given at the end of the course. Girls need to wear one piece bathing suits.

Level 6B: Lifeguard Readiness - CHPZ 1000      $75.00
Prerequisites: Level 5 skills. Parent must attend parent orientation meeting first day of class.
Level 6B Lifeguard Readiness course is an American Red Cross approved course designed to prepare students for Lifeguard or Water Safety Instructor Training courses. Endurance in front, back crawl, breastroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and butterfly swimming skills and the 7 swimming turns will be practiced. Three surface dives will be reviewed. The safety, emergency rules and care for conscious choking victim, reaching, throwing assists and rescue breathing will be practiced.  New skills taught include: power treading water; compact jumps with rescue tube; swimming with rescue tubes;  surface dives and retrieval of objects from deep water; swimming on back holding object; assisting with equipment; beach drag; victim hip and shoulder support; head splint; using backboard and 2-person removal from water.  A skill test will be given at the end of the course. Girls need to wear one piece bathing suits.

Level 6C: Personal Water Safety - CHPZ 1000  $75.00
Prerequisite Level 5 swim skills. Parent must attend orientation meeting the first day of class.

Personal Water Safety, an  American Red Cross approved course, is designed  to teach swimming and open water survival skills. All ARC swimming strokes and turns will be practiced. Participants will review 3 surface dives, the HELP and huddle positions, treading water kicks only, object retrieval from deep water, survival float, back float for 5 minutes, survival swimming, self-rescue techniques while clothed; basic safety rules for open water; basic safety rules for boating. Participants need to bring long pants and long-sleeved shirt in addition to swim suit underneath clothes.
