TAKS Read/Write grade 3 - DREZ 1000         $95.00
For those who are in 3rd grade.  Review of 3rd grade TAKS vocabulary and comprehension skills for 3rd grade mastery for successful transition to 4th grade. Games and activities will help students build vocabulary,  maintain interest, and improve reading skills. Supplies needed are pencil, paper, eraser, crayons or markers. Parent needs to attend first 15 minutes of first class. Textbook available in EFC bookstore.

For high school students preparing for the TAKS high school reading and writing tests. Using a variety of textbook materials, the student will work on improving reading speed, comprehension skills, and TAKS-test taking skills for successful transition to the next grade. If your child is struggling with math, here’s help. Focus will be to learn TAKS skills for successful testing in grades 5 and 6. Practice tests will be available. Students enjoy doing group work and playing math games to reinforce learning. Supplies needed are paper, pencil, eraser, scissors, markers, index cards, 12” ruler with metric and inches. Guitar Beginners I Children - CHLZ 1000         $95.00
For ages 7 thru 11.  E-mail instructor James Schreffler (jschreffler@dcccd.edu) or e-mail Rachel Loss-Cutler (rachel_loss-cutler@earthlink.net)  for advice on purchasing guitar. Bring your own non-electric guitar (nylon strings recommended) and have fun learning to play easy melodies and songs. Instructor will also give instruction on readng music notation. Books will be discussed in first class.  Recital at end of semester in F117.

Guitar Beginners II Children - CHLZ 1000       $95.00
Prerequisites: completed Guitar Beginners I
For ages 7-11 with previous guitar lessons or with teacher’s approval. Bring your own acoustic (not electric) guitar with nylon strings and footrest. Builds on Guitar BeginnersI, broadening knowledge of reading music.  Primarily ensemble playing with solo playing encouraged. Textbook will be discussed in first class. Recital held at end of course in F117.

Guitar I Teens - CHLZ 1000    $95.00
For ages 12 thru 18, this beginning level course will teach music note reading and the basics of playing a guitar. Bring your own acoustic (not electric) guitar with nylon strings and footrest. Emphasis will be on performance as an ensemble, but solo performance is also encouraged. Textbook will be discussed in first class.  Recital at end of course in F117 for family and friends.

Private Guitar Children - CHLZ 1000   $169.00
Prerequisites: Ages 7-18; own non-electric guitar
No experience required. Private, eleven, half-hour, one-on-one guitar lessons. Guitar Intermediate 1-3 Children - CHLZ 1000            $95.00
Prerequisites: completed Guitar I & II, ages 7-11, able to read open position on all 6 strings.
For ages 7 thru 11 with completion of Beginning Guitar II or teacher’s approval. This class encompasses intermediate levels 1-3. Emphasis is on playing for performance as an ensemble, but solo performance is encouraged.  Books will be discussed in first class. Recital Saturday 11/15/2008 in F117.

Teens & Adults Guitar Ensemble - CHLZ 1000            $95.00
Prerequisites: Ages 12+; read first and second position on all strings; able to play finger style; previous guitar lessons
For ages 12+ who can read music and play guitar in first position. Prior participation in previous guitar classes or lessons is encouraged or with permission of instructor Rachel Loss-Cutler (e-mail rachel_loss-cutler@earthlink.net.) Bring your own acoustic/classical (not electric) guitar with nylon strings and footrest. Have fun making music and playing in an ensemble. Textbook will be discussed in first class. Recital at end of course in F117 for family and friends.

Semi-Private Children’s Guitar - CHLZ 1000   $135.00
Prerequisites: Completion of Beginners I, II and be able to read open position on all 6 strings. With instructor’s recommendation.
Maximum group size of 3 students. Advanced guitar children and teen students. Registration at teacher’s request. Bring your own non-electric guitar (nylon strings recommended.) Ensemble and solo performance playing encouraged.  Books will be discussed in first class. Recital at end of semester in F117.

Piano: Beginners Children - CHLZ 1000           $95.00
Prerequisites: Ages 7 to 9 years
Small group (up to 8 participants). Designed to introduce young people to the fundamentals of note-reading at the keyboard. Regular practice is expected. Students participate in a recital at the end of the semester in F117. Books are required and information will be given to parents at the first class meeting.

Piano: Elementary - CHLZ 1000           $95.00
Prerequisites: Ages 7 to 12 years, completed the primer level book, and have taken piano lessons for 6 months to 2 years.
Small group (up to 6 participants). Regular practice is expected. Students participate in a recital at the end of the semester in F117. Books are required and information will be given to parents at the first class meeting.

Piano: Intermediate - CHLZ 1000         $95.00
Prerequisites: Ages 10 thru 12 who have taken piano lessons for 2 to 3 years
Small group class (up to 6 students).  Classes enhance the learning process by reinforcement of classroom presentations, with emphasis placed on the individual needs of each student. Students participate in a recital at the end of the semester in F117. Instructor will advise what books are required.

Prerequisites: Ages 10 thru 18

Piano: Early Advanced - CHLZ 1000   $115.00
Prerequisites: Ages 10 thru 18
Small group class (up to 4 students). This new class is for students who have completed 4+ years of piano lessons and are approved by instructor to register for this class. Lessons enhance the learning process by reinforcement of classroom presentations, with emphasis placed on the individual needs of each student. Students participate in a recital at the end of the semester in F117. Instructor will advise what books are required.

Piano: Ensemble - CHLZ 1000 $135.00
Prerequisites: Ages 9-14 with one year piano
This is a wonderful opportunity to participate in a piano group ensemble playing chamber music.  Musical dialogue and articulation can be learned through a collaborative musical experience. Enhance your child’s musicianship and expand her/his musical social arena. Students will learn new repertoire and artistic skills needed to play in duets, trios, and quartets of piano. There will be a recital performance at end of course.

Ensemble Piano Flute Violin Cello Viola - CHLZ 1000 $135.00
Prerequisites: Ages 9-14 with one year piano or violin or two years of flute
This is a wonderful opportunity to participate in a musical group ensemble playing chamber music. Music Theory For Children - CHLZ 1000        $75.00
Prerequisites: For ages 7-18.
This course will cover beginning music dynamics and terminology, grand staff, treble and bass clefs and repeat signs. Other topics will include rhythm, time and key signatures, types of notes (whole, half, quarter and eighth) and rest values. There will be a basic study of chords, intervals and chord inversion, and beginning sharps and flats.  Instructional methods will involve demonstration on board, flashcard drills, chanting, clapping and movement (steps, skips for rhythm.) Textbook information will be given to parents at the first class meeting.

Sports/Recreation

Tennis for Teens - TNPZ 1000 $90.00
For ages 9-18. Learn to play tennis as a beginner, or improve your game like a PRO! Bring 1 can of tennis balls. Class meets at EFC Tennis Courts

Swim: Beginner(age 7+) - CHPZ 1000 $75.00
Minimum age 7 years. Parent must attend parent orientation meeting the first day of class. This American Red Cross approved course is designed for children. Students will jump and step into water; exit pool using side and ladder; tread using arms and leg motions; move in water while wearing life jacket; submerge; float and glide on front and back; swim on front and back using combined strokes; swim on side. A skill test will be given at the end of the course. Girls need to wear one piece bathing suit.

Level 6:Fitness Swimmer - CHPZ 1000            $75.00
Prerequisites: Level 5 skills. Parent must attend parent orientation meeting first day of class.
Level 6 Fitness Swimmer is an American Red Cross approved course designed  to refine strokes for efficiency, power, endurance and smoothness over greater distances. All swimming strokes and 7 swimming turns will be practiced and refined. Participants will use pace clock, pull buoy, fins, and paddles. Other topics to be learned and practiced: fitness swimming etiquette, principles of setting up fitness program, training techniques, calculation of heart rate, principles of water exercise, and checking heart rate. A skill test will be given at the end of the course. Girls need to wear one piece bathing suits.
