Study Skills for Distance Learners

Distance learners must first realize that distance learning occurs in a different system from traditional classroom learning. Although distance learners must rely on many of the same study skills, some techniques that seemed natural and were successful in other courses might not work in this new system.  Learning the function of each component of a distance learning course will help students apply their skills and succeed in their courses.

Text

Purpose: The text will provide the distance learner with most of the content of the course. You should read all of the text assignments to gain vital information in the course.

Method: When you read your text, use appropriate study reading methods.  Remember, study reading—reading for information—is different than reading for pleasure. You should read the text assignment before watching the video.

Television or Video

Purpose: Each segment reinforces three or four of the important learning objectives for the course. Each video usually includes an expert in the field to help you understand key concepts of the course.

Method: Grasping main ideas from the video is more important than taking copious notes. While watching the video, you should be motivated to see the connection between the text and real life. When you need to write down key points, stop the tape or rewind so you don’t miss any vital information.

Web or CD

Purpose: Like videos, Internet or CD assignments cover main objectives for the course.

Method: Electronic media allow for more interaction between the student and the instructor.  Be assertive about contacting your instructor and, if possible, other students. It’s easier in an on-line course because you have access to Email and chat rooms to facilitate that communication. This type of involvement in your course will enhance your understanding and learning.

Study Guide

Purpose: The study guide contains self-help ideas and a pretest with sample questions from the video and text. The study guide will help you organize your learning—preview and review— and check your understanding.

Method: Complete the practice test after reading the text and watching the video. When you score your practice test, analyze your errors to see where your understanding lapsed and what parts of your assignment you need to review.
