Study Group Suggestions

  1. Keep your purpose in mind; don’t turn the sessions into social activities
  2. Prepare for each session; read all assignments, complete as much work on your own as you can
  3. Bring study materials: pencils, paper, calculators, dictionaries, etc.
  4. Keep your text and notes open and in front of you
  5. Tune in quickly — focus on the topic
  6. Think about and understand the ideas
  7. Be ready to move on when everyone else is
  8. Listen actively; think about what is being said; maintain eye contact
  9. When you speak, get to the point and stay on the subject

    • clarify facts, steps, or opinions
    • help others think
    • help others discover the value of the discussion
  11. Stay objective; listen for approaches different than your own
  12. State opposition politely and logically
  13. Participate even when you’re scared
