The Texas Gerontology Curriculum Consortium is sponsored by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board as part of a Carl Perkins Leadership grant. Each of the three participating colleges is researching various educational needs of those employed by the multiple entities serving senior citizens. A job market analysis is being conducted by researching computer based job market listings, and, by surveying special agencies and organizations within the service areas of the three colleges as to current and future employment needs.

The curricula that is currently available for providing education, knowledge and skills, in the area of senior citizen’s assistance is being surveyed. A study of the courses listed in the Texas Workforce Education Course Manual is underway to determine if there is a need for the development of additional course offerings. In addition, a study of gerontological offerings at senior colleges and universities is being conducted. From this study we will be able to determine what possible articulation opportunities are available for those students desiring to complete a baccalaureate or masters degree in the field of gerontology.

Through these studies the Consortium will be making recommendations concerning the possible development of additional curricula, course syllabi, and proposed program outlines that would lead to a certificate or an Associates degree in the field of gerontology.
