Greetings from the Texas Gerontological Consortium for Continuing Education. The Consortium was founded in approximately 1985 when a group of individuals met at the Center for Studies in Aging at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. From that initial meeting the consortium was formed to provide Continuing Education opportunities for individuals currently employed or desiring to be employed by organizations providing services to senior citizens.

Three courses were originally planned and offered primarily through the Continuing Education divisions of various community colleges across Texas. Those courses formulated the basis for the Texas Basic Certificates in Gerontology. The three courses were designed to address significant areas of knowledge relative to senior citizens. The courses are:

  • Social Environment and Aging
  • Physical Health and Aging
  • Mental Health and Aging
Each of these courses consists of twenty (20) hours of education, with outside work and study required by each participating student. Continuing Education Units and a Continuing Education Certificate are provided each successful participant in the program.

In addition to these three original course offerings two additional certificates have been developed. Those certificates are the Texas Basic Certificate in Alzheimers, and the Texas Basic Certificate in Case Management.

Contact your local community college to determine if these courses are being offered in your area.
