(Tabletop Model) Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEMs),

Eastfield College students get a rare opportunity to work

on this exclusive (graduate-level) hi-tech equipment.

Rare, because of the fact that students majoring in science research disciplines at four-year institutions don't get the hands-on experience using the SEM equipment until they begin their graduate study work.

But at Eastfield and because of the Project Pathways program, our students not only learn how to use this equipment, but a select few have become knowledgeable enough to assist in training other students as well as faculty who are interested in learning this new technology.

That's what AYROP is all about! It's Mentorship! It's Internship! It's a Job!

AYROP students work in the SEM laboratory under the direction of the grants' Principal Investigator and professor of biology, Dr. Carl Knight and The SEM laboratory coordinator, Ms. Jessica Silva.

Ms. Jessica SilvaBy the way, Ms. Silva is a former NSF scholar that participated in the Summer Science Institute program.

Her research work was performed at the Big Thicket National Preserve in Saratoga, Tx.

Through her work there and her commitment to excellence, Ms. Silva has attained the required knowledge and skill sets to be hired into this position. She also tutors!

Eastfield faculty in several Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields have integrated the SEM into their curriculums. They use the SEM digital displays to illustrate SEM concepts and to create opportunities for students in STEM courses to master course content.

AYROP was designed to:

  • enrich STEM course content in the classrooms
  • add to inquiry-based learning objectives
  • allow access to research opportunities early in students' undergraduate careers, and to
  • broaden access to STEM fields of study

AT EASTFIELD, IT ALL BEGINS HERE!
