Selected individuals will become part of a very special group
that will take part in an innovative experiment that allows community
college students to actively participate in undergraduate research
utilizing high tech scientific equipment early in their academic
careers. Students are selected for this program based on their
interest in the basic sciences, career goals, and their academic
potential.
The Big Thicket National Preserve
was selected for this project because it is considered by the
United Nations as one of the ten areas in the world that
needs to be protected because of its biodiversity. The
project will involve many local and national organizations in
addition to Eastfield College participants.
The goal of
this project is for students to become involved in ongoing research
work. Eastfield College participants work with the National Park
Service and others as they conduct the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory
(ATBI) of the Big Thicket National Preserve, which is located
in the southeastern part of Texas. We assist them in collecting
data for future use for Nationals strategic planning related to
the environmental problems such as global warming.
