Formation of the Science Club
The NSF STEP grant team has collaborated with the Eastfield College Office of Student Programs and Resources (SPAR) to organize a new student-led Science Club.

This development represents a major recruitment effort by the Project to encourage more students to pursue science fields of study and careers by providing enrichment experiences for them to see science in action.

Students consistently report that the Science Club has created a learning community on Eastfield's commuter campus and students now feel a sense of belonging at the college among both their peers and with the science faculty.

The Science Club (founded in Fall 2006 by its advisor Dr. Carl Knight) maintains a mailing list of up to 90 students per semester, with an active core group of about 40 participants, and an executive committee of 6-8 students who help organize the events, many of which are co-sponsored by STEP.

Highlights of the 2006-2007 academic year included field trips, a guest seminar series, and service learning opportunities.

Student Commentaries
"Last semester, science was just science to me..."

"The science club has made me more aware of things around me."

"It made me feel like I was a part of something important."

"I feel more connected to the science community here, but also to Eastfield itself. It's difficult to have a 'true' college experience at a community college, but this club has helped me experience that here."

"I am more aware of the opportunities available because of the involvement of NSF-STEP with the science club."

"I used to know exactly what I wanted to do before I realized that there was so much more out there."

"I attended every seminar this semester!"

"It has showed me what real scientists do in the real world."

"The things they talked about inspired me."
