History does not change, but our perspectives on history change based on the discovery of new information. While history does not repeat itself, those who fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat those lessons. In my classes, I try to explain the big ideas of history in everyday terms and situations that everyone can understand. My classes foster a learning-centered environment based on cooperative learning, mutual trust and open communication. Rather than memorizing a list of facts, I believe it is more important that we learn the lessons of history so that we do not repeat mistakes that others have made. I believe that any student can succeed in my classes, and I find that those students who attend class, are on time, and have completed the reading assignments, almost always earn good grades. My most important job is to help students think critically and become more informed, engaged, ethical and successful citizens.
