Federal Subsidized Stafford LoanTo be eligible, students must have financial need, make satisfactory academic progress towards their educational goal, and be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours. As an undergraduate, the student may borrow up to $3,500 per year for the first year and $4,500 for the second year with a $23,000 maximum for all years of undergraduate study. The actual loan may be limited to less than this, depending on the cost of attendance, other financial aid, and the family financial condition. The U.S. Department of Education pays the interest during the time the student is enrolled and during the grace period of 6 months following enrollment. The interest rate is variable and will not exceed 8.25%. Borrowers do not begin repayment of the loan until 6 months after the student completes or drops enrollment to less than six credit hours. The loan must be repaid within 10 years. |
