Nikki Giovanni is one of our most widely read American poets. She is an advocate of civil rights and equality in education. She speaks with great humor on her life and on the creativity in everything we do. The topic "African American History and Poetry in the African American Diaspora" will captivate you. Speaker Series – Sarah Weddington

Eastfield College is to honored to host Ms. Sarah Weddington. At the tender of age of 26, Ms. Weddington successfully argued the landmark Supreme Court case, Roe v. Wade. She went on to become the first woman from Austin ever elected to the Texas House of Representatives, and then served as an assistant to President Jimmy Carter. She is the author of A Question of Choice, and currently teaches at the University of Texas. A small reception will immediately follow her presentation.

Speaker Series – Billy Mills

Billy Mills is the national Spokesperson for Running Strong for American Indian Youth. An Oglala Lakota (Sioux) who was raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, Billy earned a track scholarship to the University of Kansas and later served as an Officer in the United States Marine Corps.
In the 1964 Olympics, Billy Mills shocked the world when he came from behind to win the gold medal in the 10k race. Billy Mills and Nicholas Sparks co-wrote the book “Walini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Understanding”. Billy Mills was also the inspiration for the movie, “Running Brave”.
Today, Billy travels and visits American Indian communities throughout the U.S. and speaks to American Indian youth about healthy lifestyles and taking pride in their heritage.
His speaking engagement at Eastfield will focus on “overcoming obstacles and dealing with opposition”. This inspirational message will be one that all students can relate to.
